Project story
After the Second World War ‘new towns’ attracted people from far and wide, offering modern housing, job opportunities and bustling centres for the community. Over the years, as architectural design has transformed and people’s living and social habits have changed, many now lack the same desirability that they were once famed for.
As the first ‘new town’ in the UK, Stevenage had plenty to offer in the 1950s and for many years after. Now, exciting new plans for a high-quality mixed-use development across 14 acres will once again transform this historic town to attract new people and commercial investment.
As the appointed developer we are working in partnership with the local authority, other public sector landowners and bodies, the local business community and residents to deliver this major transformational development that will bring back the excitement and optimism of the 1950’s and launch the town into the 21st Century.
Situated just 19 minutes from London by train and set over 14 acres of public sector land, SG1 holds huge potential for the 1.1m sqft development of buildings that will include new homes, shops, bars and restaurants.
When complete the community will also benefit from an integrated public services hub comprising new state-of-the-art health centre, library, registry office, exhibition space and council offices all under one roof, as well as attractive new streets, squares and public realm, improving pedestrian and cycle connections across the town.
