Project story
Founded in 1884, Hong Kong Jockey Club is one of Hong Kong’s oldest and most prestigious institutions, offering dining, social, sporting and recreation facilities. The Sha Tin Racecourse has a capacity of 85,000 and, opening in 1978, is the larger of the two racecourses run by the club. It hosts the ‘Turf World Championship’ and the Hong Kong International Race - two of the world’s richest race days.
We were appointed in 2011 to kick start extensive renovations to ensure customers are provided with an unparalleled race day experience.
The project had three unique phases. The first involved the demolition and rebuilding of significant areas of the grandstands, updating facilities such as the numerous lifts and chilled water systems and introducing a stunning new glass façade of the grandstand in place of exterior terrace seating. Phase 2 of the masterplan included delivery of more first-class restaurants, betting halls and amending yet more large-scale mechanical, electrical and public health elements. We also undertook a major overhaul of the mechanical, ventilation and air-conditioning system including installing new chillers.
The final phase saw the construction of 6,000 square meters of new space with an overall construction value of HKD200m, including alteration and additional works, fit out and electrical and mechanical works, infrastructure and front and back-of-house upgrades.
The result? A fresh, modern and state of the art facility for a new generation racecourse at one of the world’s largest horse-racing venues.
