CloseProject story
With its iconic blue and yellow façade and spacious warehouse design, Swedish retailer IKEA is one of the most recognisable furniture brands in the world. At the end of 2021, MaceTpm’s talented consultants, the client, SM Prime Holdings, and the local community in Pasay City, celebrated the delivery of this landmark project – the largest IKEA store in the world and the very first in the Philippines.
Located in a mall complex near Manila Bay, the vast five-storey development boasts two floors dedicated to retail, a 12-metre-tall warehouse, in-store dining and call centre to manage local online shopping, as well as facilities that act as the launchpad for IKEA’s ecommerce operations in the Philippines.
Appointed in 2018, MaceTpm worked in close collaboration with the client to overcome the numerous challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic - including several months of lockdown and site closures, supply chain disruptions and restrictions on movement.
Drawing on extensive practical delivery expertise, MaceTpm helped usher this project to completion, providing a range of consultancy services to SM Prime Holdings - from construction and commercial management to design expertise.
In addition to the bespoke base build and the IKEA façade, our consultants also managed the fitout of the 65,000 sqm retail store - a space comparable to 150 basketball courts - on a design and build basis.
The mixed-use facility connects via a 32-metre wide link bridge to the SM Mall of Asia. Spanning a busy access road, the bridge structure was completed in just four weeks using steel beams and nine-metre spans of precast hollowcore.
On 25 November 2021, IKEA Pasay City opened its doors to the public for the very first time. The home furnishing brand is serving the needs of a growing middle class and a booming residential market in the Philippines, and as a project, it has also created 2,500 jobs for the local workforce, with the store now providing employment opportunities for more than 500 staff.
