Project story
There is a new community hub taking shape in Kenya, combining leisure, work and home life.
Garden City is a premier mixed-use development on an extensive 47-acre development along the Thika superhighway in Nairobi. Developed by leading growth market private equity investor, Actis, it offers hundreds of homes, a shopping mall, 60,000 sqm of office space, a modern business hotel and state-of-the-art medical centre, and three-acre park.
Quality is the defining characteristic of Garden City and the entire site has been planned with security in mind, through design, location and secure technology.
MaceYMR and Actis’ joint passion for collaboration and community has seen us work closely together from the initial stages of the project in 2011. MaceYMR has provided cost management, cost control services and procurement to integral parts of Actis’ Garden City Estate development and continues to support further stages with strategic advice, ensuring the project is delivered to the highest quality as well as adding value for money for our client’s customers.
The completed first phase of the scheme comprised a 35,000 sqm premier retail mall, which opened in May 2015 and today welcomes over 450,000 customers a month. Garden City residences total 215 high-end apartments and townhouses which were completed in 2017.
The scheme is well connected, conveniently located 10 minutes from the Nairobi Business District and 25 minutes to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport – creating hundreds of job opportunities for local people. Sustainability is also at its core; it’s the first mixed-use development in East Africa to gain LEED’s green certification. Shortly after breaking ground in July 2013, the project was awarded Vision 2030 status by the Kenyan Government in recognition of its economic growth impact.
With a strong understanding of Actis’ needs and requirements, we have helped to deliver one of the most successful mixed-use schemes in East Africa on time and under budget. Actis and MaceYMR are continuing this great partnership on the next phase of the project, which encompasses the three-phase development of 600 affordable housing units called Mi-Vida Homes. The first phase of this project is currently under way and due for completion in November of 2021.
