New build prison at Wellingborough takes significant step forward

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has announced a significant step forward for the Prison Estate Transformation Programme, with construction work due to begin on a new build prison at Wellingborough.

The MoJ – supported by Mace as Programme Delivery Partner – has announced that main contractor Kier is due to begin the construction of a new build resettlement prison at Wellingborough. The new ‘category C’ resettlement prison will be on the same site as the former HMP Wellingborough which closed in 2012.

The new facility will provide 1,680 new prison places, with modern facilities to encourage rehabilitation among men. More than 60,000m2 of accommodation facilities and ancillary buildings will housed on the site in Northamptonshire.

Mace is supporting the prison estate transformation programme to ensure we are getting the basics right by building decent prisons to improve rehabilitation and create safe and secure environments for staff and men.

Mace is acting as Programme Delivery Partner with WT Partnership fulfilling the role of cost consultant for the wider prison estate transformation programme. Mace has worked closely with the MoJ to oversee programme, design and procurement for the new prison at Wellingborough. The design has been standardised to provide a blueprint for future prison developments in the programme.
