Hat trick for Mace at the Construction News Awards 2016
Last night at the Construction News Awards 2016 in London, Mace walked away with three awards in the most prestigious categories: Contractor of the Year, Project of the Year over £50m for Birmingham New Street and Project of the Year £10-30m for Sky’s Believe in Better Building.
Last year Mace celebrated its 25th anniversary and the awards are recognition of the hard work put in by the whole team. The company is always trying to find a better way to deliver projects, challenge convention and to change our industry. Today we are helping to make the industry much safer and its buildings much more efficient.
As a leading contractor, Mace is systematically addressing sustainability issues and taking responsibilities to the communities in which it works seriously. We also continued to deliver a better on outstanding projects such as South Bank Tower, Television Centre, Sky’s Believe in Better Building, Vauxhall Sky Gardens and Nova, Victoria.
In awarding Mace Contractor of the Year, the judges said that the company’s performance was “testament to strong leadership and the difference it can make defining an organisation. A winner has to cover all the bases outlined in these awards’ criteria, and Mace proved this with a smart, innovative, ambitious and bold approach. The company is in constant pursuit of a better way of delivering projects, raising the status of the profession.”
September 2015 marked the completion of Birmingham New Street (BNS) station the largest rail station redevelopment in Europe. It was awarded Project of the Year (over £50m) for its high standard of work including innovation, adherence to budget and client satisfaction in a healthy and safe working environment. This category celebrates the best of UK construction – something that Birmingham New Street Station and the Grand Central retail redevelopment personifies.
And finally, we won Project of the Year £10-30m for Sky’s Believe in Better Building. Home to the Sky Academy, the building took just under 10 months to complete and was built with the next generation in mind. The project had extensive community engagement resulting in 144 people being trained– with 56 now working with Mace on a follow-up project. Safety initiatives led to zero RIDDORs and the team won a Gold Award at the Considerate Constructors Scheme’s National Site Awards.
Rebecca Evans, editor of Construction News said: “Over the last 20 years the CN Awards have become the largest and most prestigious in the industry. Some parts of the industry have changed beyond recognition during that time, but some things in this industry remain constant: your passion, your pride, your dedication, your desire to innovate and improve ways of working. All our finalists exemplify these traits.
“A huge congratulations to our winners, who are laying the ground for the UK construction industry of the future. At CN, we will do everything we can to promote your achievements far and wide.”
Gareth Lewis, COO of Construction at Mace, said: “Winning three awards is a great achievement for us. Winning the award for Contractor of the Year recognises the most outstanding main contractor in the UK construction industry so it’s something to be really proud of. The fact that two of our best projects from last year also won – Birmingham New Street station and Sky’s Believe in Better Building – demonstrates that we are consistently delivering a better way for our clients.”
